Song of the Week – What this Song Means to Ro

You Speak

Another Song of the Week Saturday is upon us. Brewed a cup of coffee and settling onto the couch to do some work. With “E! News” playing in the background and headphones plugged into the computer, the song begins, “I don’t know where you’re going or when you’re coming home. I left the keys under the mat to our front door for one more chance to hold you close. I don’t know where you’re going. Just get your ass back home.” My cheeks begin to tingle as a rush of chills sweeps through my forearms landing on my hands. The same reaction as every other time I listen to this song. Neon’s voice is so pretty yet so stern. I don’t care anymore…I’m over it…JUST GET YOUR ASS BACK HOME. Its not fun anymore.

In come Travie’s response, “We both knew this type of life didn’t come with instructions. So I’m trying to do my best to make something out of nothing. And sometimes it gets downright shitty in fact.

Touche is all I can say to that! The prison wife life is a shitty one indeed.

And on he goes:
“And you’ve been nothing but amazing. And I never take that for granted. Half of these birds would have flew the coop. But you, you truly understand it. And the fact you stood beside me, Every time you heard some bogusness. You deserve a standing o ‘cause they’d a just been over it. Let ‘em talk, let ‘em talk, let ‘em talk, let ‘em talk. Like we don’t hear what they saying. Let ‘em walk, let ‘em walk, let ‘em walk, let ‘em walk. We’ll just drive by and keep waving. Cause you and I above all that. Just let them wallow in it. Now they all choked up, yuck. Cause they be swallowing it.”

I LOVE that part! Everyone, their brother, sister, mother, boyfriend, even their aunt’s-extended-cousin’s-hair-dresser has something to say about my prison relationship (hah!). I can’t help but bite my tongue, “Don’t you think I’ve thought of every bit of ‘bogusness’ you could tell me and then some? You’re not telling me anything new and truthfully, you’re not trying to help! You’re unsatisfied with your own life and need to make yourself feel better by commenting on mine. I don’t go around doling out relationship advice to anyone I pass on the street, so why do you think its okay for you to do to me? I’ll do what I want to do regardless, so safe your breath. In fact, we’ll let you walk, let you talk…we’ll drive by and keep waving as you wallow in it because we ARE above all that!

God, I love this song!

“No one hold me down like you do sweetheart. You keep doing that, I keep doing this. We’ll be alright in the end. Trust that
We put the ‘us’ in trust, baby.”

Yes, we do! I promise to keep holding it down…now get your ass back home!
